When planning our trip to Ecuador my secret dream was to see the violet-tailed sylph. I had seen pictures of it and thought it to be one of the most beautiful little birds that I had seen.
It can be found in Colombia and Ecuador at altitudes of 300 meters but usually above 900 meters. The males average about 7 inches in length while the females are about 3.8 inches in length.
They are solitary and are usually found inside forests or around clumps of flowers.
Needless to say we were so thrilled to finally see this little gem.
