After a late-November storm destroyed or damaged 29 ships on a single day in 1905, the US Congress appropriated $75,000 for the construction of this lighthouse to protect shipping on Lake Superior. Split Rock Lighthouse was commissioned in 1910 and remained in service until 1969. The site has been restored to depict life as it was in the 1920s and is now maintained and operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. This image is my attempt to capture the lighthouse in a style reminiscent of its heyday. A more contemporary view of this iconic Minnesota lighthouse may be found at:500px.com/photo/6984282
