The sword-billed hummingbird is a rare species of hummingbird and is rarely seen and when it is spotted it moves at a break necking speed making it very difficult to capture. It can be found in Bolivia, Colombia,Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
It is the only species of bird that has a bill longer than their body which allows them to go deep into some flowers that other hummingbirds can not get to. They also have very long tongues and their body from tail to the base of the bill measures about 5.5 inches making it one of the largest hummingbirds. Since it has such a long bill it has to groom itself with it's feet.
Seeing this hummingbird was an incredible thrill and how our wildlife adapts is always amazing to me.
