"One of my favourite northern Italian towns visited on my first Europe trip was Vicenza. I returned a couple of years later to reshoot the main piazza with a better grasp of photography. I was annoyed to find many of the main buildings in the square to be under the cover of unsightly scaffolding. Feeling slightly deflated, I wandered over to a cafe at the edge of the piazza to join the locals having their macchiati, reading the papers and people watching. While pondering my next move, I noticed the golden afternoon light on the cobblestones of the piazza. Even though you'll encounter people on bicycles all over Italy, I've always strongly associated Vicenza with loads of smartly dressed folk whizzing past me on their bikes. I decided to combine these two elements together for this result."
