Ben Canonica and Colin Faherty take pride in their light touch in the forest. I was amazed at how little compaction and damage the horses did while removing the logs despite the rain we'd had. Ben wasn't completely pleased. After a long day, in the fading light they grabbed rakes and repaired places they felt were too rutted. Horse make this operation like surgery. But as Ben told me, a poor operator can still make a mess with horses. You have to be careful no matter what equipment you use. But Ben clearly is careful and plans each skid for safety and to protect the forest floor.
