Portrait of a Huntress - Competition 3 of 5

Every now and then everything comes together but sometimes you have good luck on a bad day like on this particular photograph.

We were traveling for 5 days to look and find the "Mega Pride" of Satara in the Kruger National Park.
This pride consists of 30+ lions which include 5 adult males.

The driving time from Skukuza to Satara is 4 hrs for 85 km. For 5 days we got up at 3.00 a.m. to be in time for the first light and hoped to find the pride on the way and returned at 21.00 every day.

But even with all the tips we received from various sources we were not able to find a single cat during this time, except on our last day at 12.00 noon when we spotted a larger pride of roughly 10 lions who killed a zebra earlier on.
Unfortunately we were not the only ones who were at the kill and we fought our way through 20 cars to get a good angle and view point.

The zebra was nearly finished and the only good photo opportunity would have been what everybody else took.
My friend I and were discussing to drive on and make our way home, being exhausted from 5 very long days in 39 C when I spotted the alpha female laying under the bush panting like crazy in the heat.
The moment I had my camera ready she decided to sit up and showing me her open mouth with blood from the feast still dripping out.
For me this particular photograph makes up all the long days, the little sleep, the 2000 km we spend on dirt roads and not finding the mega pride.
