On top of the highest of the three hills that make up the city of San Miniato between 1217 and 1223, Frederick II built a fortress to complete the defensive works already undertaken by Otto I. The Rock of Frederick II with the Tower of Matilde, the current bell tower, and the tower of Crows (demolished in the eighteenth century) were the anchors of the fortifications of the city. It is believed that since the time of the Romans stationed on the hill was a command center.
The strategic location of the tower allowed, in medieval times, to put a control on transit between Florence and Pisa. The characteristics of the structure indicate the probable participation in the construction of workers Normans. An inscription on the tower reported that to oversee the building of the tower was the Imperial Chancellor Conrad of Spira.
Inside, according to tradition, was blinded Pier delle Vigne, former secretary of the emperor and then fell into disgrace under charges of treason or corruption.
In 1530 it was abandoned and was purchased along with the surrounding land by the naturalist Michele Mercati chief physician to Pope, who established his residence. At 22:30 on 23 July 1944 the retreating Germans, the mined and razed it to the ground.

La Rocca di Federico II è una torre di San Miniato

Sulla sommità del più alto dei tre colli che compongono la città di San Miniato tra il 1217 e il 1223 Federico II di Svevia fece costruire una rocca a completamento delle opere difensive già intraprese da Ottone I. La Rocca di Federico II insieme alla Torre di Matilde, attuale campanile della Cattedrale, e alla torre delle Cornacchie (abbattuta nel XVIII secolo) erano i fulcri della fortificazioni della città. Si ritiene che già al tempo dei Romani sul colle fosse dislocato un centro di comando.
La posizione strategica della torre ha consentito, in epoca medievale, di porre un controllo sul transito tra Firenze e Pisa. Le caratteristiche della struttura indicano la probabile partecipazione alla costruzione di maestranze normanne. Un'iscrizione posta sulla torre riportava che a sopraintendere alla edificazione della torre era stato il cancelliere imperiale Corrado da Spira.
Al suo interno, secondo una tradizione, sarebbe stato accecato Pier delle Vigne, già segretario dell'imperatore e poi caduto in disgrazia sotto accuse di tradimento o di corruzione.
Nel 1530 fu abbandonata e fu acquistata insieme ai terreni circostanti dal naturalista Michele Mercati archiatra pontificio, che vi stabilì la propria residenza. Alle 22:30 del 23 luglio 1944 i tedeschi in ritirata, la minarono e la rasero al suolo.
