Norway is not really an interesting country if you like to visit cities. Of course, as a city-liker you will be able to find interesting stuff here and there, but you might be deceived in the end. However, there is always the exception that proves the rule : Ålesund. Practically totally burnt by a fire in 1904 (Norwegian cities used to be built mostly in wood), fire that miraculously killed only one person, Ålesund has been totally reconstructed between 1904 and 1907 thanks to the help of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last emperor of Germany. The interesting fact is that Ålesund has been rebuilt in "Art Nouveau" style, the prevailing architectural style in Germany at this time. Even if the city has been partially destroyed by Germans during WWII, some parts have been spared, giving her this undeniable charm and the title of Norway's most beautiful city. If you have the chance to visit Norway one day, you should give it a try. You'll see, there is a little something in this city that will make you want to stay a bit longer than expected!
