Thanks to Adam Abbott for dragging me out to try this:

OK everyone, here are some tips:

You need:
• Wet blanket and/or fire extinguisher just in case
• Metal dog lead/chain
• Metal wisk
• Fine wire wool
• Lighter or matches
• Camera
• Tripod
• Torch
• Daring friend (with protective hat, clothing and goggles)

1. Load the wisk with wire wool
2. Attach the wisk to the end of the chain
3. Set focus using a torch then make sure auto focus is off
3. Get friend to light the wool (it shouldn't start a flame)
4. Friend swings wool on chain
5. Take photo (A small aperture will keep the flying embers sharp. I used f13 at 20 seconds)

IMPORTANT: If anyone reading this doesn't realise that this is dangerous then DO NOT try this. As you can see, swinging hot wire wool round your head results in red hot embers flying off. These continue burning wherever they land and sometimes larger clumps can fly out so keep away from anything that you could burn of injure.
