Taken this past weekend in the White Mountains in CA. After my backpacking plans for the weekend fell apart (damn NP's and their anti dog stance), I was forced (enabled) to shoot some other locations along hwy 395. After driving up what has to be one of the most scenic roads in America (think Trail Ridge Road in RMNP), you arrive at this ancient Bristlecone Forest whose residents are the oldest known trees on the planet, some of which are approaching 5000 years old. To give you an idea of how old this is, this means these trees were around when the pyramids were being built in Egypt! As the stars came out and lightning storms lit up the great basin down below, I could only imagine what these trees have endured over time.
