Shooting from the side was not my original plan for this Gerber. I had started the session by composing the shot straight on, cropping tightly to emphasize the centre of the flower. I have photographed Gerbers before and I became aware that I was repeating the same composition as in previous sessions.
Resolute not to repeat myself I sat down and really looked at the Gerber. I eventually noticed the tiny hairs – behind the flower – covering the base of the bloom. Snowy white, they contrasted beautifully with the dark, richness of the stalk. I had found what I was looking for.
