If you look Nakama (仲間) up, you'll find the definition to be exceptionally wide. While it doesn't completely embrace friend (although, in nuance it does), it sits in a unique place that cradles someone in your pack, someone you go to war with, someone you have a fellowship with.

Japan's snow monkeys are a 3 hour trip from Tokyo and like everything else, it is one old lady complaining about a monkey giving her a dirty look shy of being shut down - so if you get the chance, head over. The monkey's ignore humans and allow them to get remarkably close. It is a wonderful experience and an easy first step in shooting wildlife.
