This building in Manhattan NYC now bears the sign of a company called MetLife, but originally it was designed and built for a company called PanAm and carried the name for many years. Eventually, PanAm sold the building to MetLife and when PanAm (an american airline company) went out of business MetLife changed the sign on top of the building to MetLife from PanAm.

This is not a loved building in NY, in fact I think most people dislike rather than like it, many feel it is a brooding industrial design that dominates the avenue it straddles.

Anyway, I still think of it as the PanAm building, as I think most New Yorkers still do.

For more see this on Wikepedia, which titles it the "MetLife" Building, which I guess is technically correct, but also spiritually wrong I feel.
