This chunky, squat little heron is one of the most common and widespread herons in North America. However, as its name suggests, many people have never seen one because they are mainly active at twilight and into the night.

We see them frequently in the creeks that flow into the Niagara River, with the most frequent sightings taking place in April - May.

Night herons eat fish, crustaceans, bugs, and the eggs and chicks of other birds, if they find them unprotected.
