San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Patrimonio de la Humanidad, se encuentra localizado al Noroeste de la Comunidad de Madrid, en la vertiente sur oriental de la Sierra de Guadarrama.
Este entorno de singular belleza fue el elegido por el Rey Felipe II para construir el Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, cumpliendo los deseos de su padre Carlos V de construir un Panteón Real que, en su tiempo, representó el espíritu de su imperio y la grandeza de la dinastía austriaca.
El rey concibió un gran complejo multifuncional, monacal y palaciego que, plasmado por su arquitecto Juan Bautista de Toledo según el paradigma de la Traza Universal, dio origen al estilo herreriano.
Se consideró desde finales del siglo XVI, la Octava Maravilla del Mundo, tanto por su tamaño y complejidad funcional, como por su enorme valor simbólico. Su arquitectura marcó el paso del plateresco renacentista al clasicismo desornamentado. Obra ingente, de gran monumentalidad, no sólo es un edificio de perfecta traza, sino también un enorme receptáculo de las demás artes.
Sus esculturas, pinturas, cantorales, ornamentos litúrgicos, pergaminos y demás objetos sacros, suntuarios y áulicos, hacen que El Escorial sea también un museo. Su compleja iconografía e iconología ha merecido las más variadas interpretaciones de admiradores, historiadores y críticos. El Escorial es la realización de las ideas y de la voluntad de su creador, Felipe II, un príncipe renacentista.
