The Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye

Set off from Nottingham at 6:30pm, got to the car park at the foot of Storr by 3:00am, slept for an hour, and set off in the moonlight around 4:00am. About three-quarters of the way up a horizontal snow blizzard kicked in which felt more severe as the clouds came down around us. We had GPS to guide us and were kitted out for the cold but it was tough walking nonetheless. We hunkered down out of the wind for about another forty minutes when the skies cleared a little. By then the moon had moved round to the right, creating a large shadow over Storr and the Old Man but still managed to get a couple of nocturnal shots before moving across the gully to get the Old Man with the rising sun. Sunrise itself wasn't that amazing - this 'breakthrough' came about half an hour later when the sun cracked its way delightfully through the clouds and that little shimmer of the small body of water, bottom left, really caught my eye. After 4 days of wall-to-wall rain on the same trip last year, it was just the start to this year's proceedings we were hoping for and justified the huge cooked breakfast which followed in Portree.
