If light is a photographer’s best friend, angles are an invaluable ally in every situation.

On a hot tropical afternoon I was on my way to Clarke Quay in Singapore during a brief visit in mid-December 2007 when I saw a row of lanterns stretching down a long walkway with hand-carved wooden triangular trusses.

After taking a couple of shots of the bright red-and-gold lanterns against the dark wood, I suddenly realised that the best shot would be to stand directly under one of the lanterns, leave the hanging tassels out of focus and concentrate on the red-and-gold orb instead.

Depth of field, in this case, was the best option to emphasise the beautiful Oriental craftsmanship.

It was only later – when I viewed this image full-size on my laptop – that I realised the traditional lamp encased an energy-efficient light globe; really a case of ancient tradition meeting modern technology.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my work in any way.
