No, this is not the typical habitat for Mallard ducks in Ottawa! It was a cold spring day when I found them on the railway line, and I think they must have been there for the warmth stored in the rails and stones. They were not in any hurry to leave either. I walked after them for quite a distance and they just walked ahead of me rather than flying off.
