As part of a 7-day photography workshop in Utah's Cedar Mesa we hiked to some very remote areas in search of Anasazi ruins dating back over 1000 years. It is estimated that there are as many at 60,000 ancient ruins scattered throughout the remote canyons of the Colorado Plateau. While all of the ruins are fascinating to visit not all of them are photographable. This ruin is clearly an exception to the rule.
Known popularly as "House on Fire Ruin" the unusual patterns in the sandstone roof of the alcove create the illusion of flames shooting from the ceiling. The best time of day to view the phenomenon is early afternoon when the reflected light of the sun sets the house "on fire" for a brief moment each day.
