I visited the Matthei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor just after Christmas, and was surprised to find it busy enough that the staff felt compelled to inform me that I would not be allowed to set up my tripod to avoid obstructing traffic flow. After some time, the people thinned out and I disobeyed that rule only briefly to get this capture. :)
The orchids at the garden are planted at a corner behind a couple of benches, so composition has a few more constraints than a studio environment. For this shot, I quickly composed the image and then leaned over to hold a sheet of black construction paper behind the orchid (being careful not to touch the plants) as I triggered the shutter.
