Philly has the largest mural arts program in the U.S. Started in 1984, there are now over 3,000 murals in the city. These murals are created by the people, for the people. If interested, you can read more about them at the muralarts dot org web site. It’s a great program doing a lot of wonderful work.
While I have photographed some of them during the day, it is at night that they surprise you the most.
Even a smaller space can benefit from added visual interest. What often happens in the city is a building or two is torn down and it leaves an exposed, windowless shared wall from the remaining building. A vacant lot is easily converted to a parking lot with a blank canvas waiting for inspiration. Now, if only this gentleman would upgrade his cell phone....
