The coastline around Tasmania is populated with kelp forests locally known as bullkelp.
Here on the western side the coast is pounded by Southern Ocean swells of up to 20 metres. The kelp colonies survive being pounded against the foreshore rock outcrops by having a very strong foothold and fast growth rates.
