All we need is a big stick (sorry couldn't resist)! Here is the second in the series of the heron couple while they were busy building their nest. She was a happy wife with all of his labours of love/lust and I think he was quite proud of himself. He would fly down to the tree line, break off a branch and then fly back up to the top of the palm tree where they would both work on adding it to the existing sticks. I think the fluffed out chest feathers and crown show her appreciation on this image. I still have some more to post - including the hug when he was finished for the day :))
Although they don't mate for life, they form a strong bond and stay together until their young have fledged. The display above is part of their mating ritual, it was a privilege to watch and photograph this intimate behaviour.
