For an image of Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park in winter I used a small-sensored compact digital camera and a very small carbon tripod. On this multi-night, winter ski-tour, I could only afford to carry limited extra weight. I would never have captured this image without spending time at the location the evening before. Despite overcast, snowy weather, I skied up to the crater rim and scouted hoping for dawn light the next day. As I gazed over the lake I felt echoes of the eruptive force that created such a powerful landscape. This entire mountain literally exploded in the recent geologic past. At dawn I was at my chosen location on the rim and nature kindly provided me both light and mist. I set the small camera vertically on my tripod and quickly captured the scene in eight overlapping frames...
