I don't know how I had managed to go two full years without hitting the Olympic beaches, yet here we are. So, long weekend plus stellar forecast means I sauntered on over to the coast for a couple of days. A quick consult of the tide table suggested target #1 would be Rialto Beach, since I'd never really come away with anything I've liked from there and it works pretty well at higher tides. And then the sky looked absolutely nuts too - though it didn't quite explode into the pinks and magentas I was expecting it to, but hey it's January and I'll take what I can get. This was my first real serious field test of my new big boy toys (Nikon D600 + 16-35 f/4) and I have to say I am absolutely blown away how good this camera and lens are. Insane latitude in the shadows and detail so sharp that I feel like I could cut myself from just looking at the crispy edges this lens produces. I cannot wait to get this thing into the mountains this year, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone considering jumping to a full frame body.
