Most important piece of equipment when shooting animals - patience. Fabulous shot, and great planning for it!

A tree top hide you say. The pic was certainly worth the discomfort and wait. Chance favors the prepared.

This is a stunning capture, i like how the emphasis is on the birds face and the lizard, i think it works really well

Thanks mike. To be honest, there wasn't quite enough light for me to throw more of the bird into focus - I didn't set out to just get the face / lizard in focus, nature forced me to go with that.

Sorry I missed this yesterday John, been tied up but that focus looks great..... really works that manual focusing and thank you for sharing that!!! What a moment to catch..... well worth the wait - a very very fine capture!!! Do you reckon f5.6 would get that detail on all the wing? I haven't got a clue by the way lol!!! Off to the Highlands on 4th March, with Neil on 5th March. Would be great to get feedback off you!!!

Hi Sue,
this was shot atf 3.5 (not sure what has happened to the info field in the camera details window on the right...) and that gave about the minimum depth of field necessary to get the beak, eye and lizard in focus. I would think f8 or higher would get most of the wing in focus. It wasn't a bright day and I was trying to keep the shutter speed high enough to freeze the bird, withought running into too much high ISO noise hence the wide aperture, but in retrospect I could have upped the ISO and stopped down a bit more.
