Taken on Bones Lane in Horne. Situated between Newchapel and Smallfield, this rather innocuous road intersects what used to be the airfield at RAF Horne (ALG). From the perspective of the photo to the small tree in the middle is just about the width of the runway (north east to south west). Three squadrons of Spitfires flew a co-ordinated offensive from this location between 30 April 1944 and 19 June that year. There's also a rather beautiful memorial on this same road about 100 meters behind this location on the right-hand-side of the road marking the airfield. I use this road everyday and always reminds me of the sheer bravery those pilots had and how indebted we are to them.
