I've been to Deal – UK before trying to photograph the pier and surroundings on sunrise but I have never found the ideal conditions. I've been watching the weather and it seemed last Friday (25/01) would be a good try. Sea level was coming up, it was a heavy overcast day and there was just a layer of light in the horizon. All good, apart from the freezing conditions. I think it was something around -10Celcius and windy... and snowy! But if you don't do it, you don't get it. My only concern was my hands. I still can't find a decent glove to wear in freezing conditions, but never mind.
I actually took a sequence of photos from near the pear where you can see the sun rising in perfect shape crossing the pier. I will post that picture later. One interesting bit is that after the sun raised, it literally disappeared behind the heavy dark clouds.
I wandered around for a bit trying both 16-35 F4 lens and 70-200 f2.8 so I could isolated some bits of the pier.
This particular picture, I was waiting for a wave to come so it adds some foreground interest against the dark pebble. I adjust the colors on Nik Software and cropped to a 16x9 format to remove a bit of the sky that wasn't so interesting after the initial dark part.
