Probably the stones were on top at one point, but with the sun warming them up, they sank back down. Or perhaps because of their weight they stayed put and the mud heaved around them. Either way, the arrangement along a central line reminded me a bit of a ceremonial mask--one of those long wooden masks sometimes worn by indigeonous people in their dances. Some folks on the shore must have wondered what I was doing taking pictures of stones in frozen mud.
