Julian, this is absolutely great! For a guy who professes no skill at wildlife photography, you came up with a really gorgeous shot here.Great tones and colours and sharp as a tack. (For what it's worth, you outscored my best bird shot with this one, and it's your first!!) You asked, so I'll suggest that this photo could have been even more dramatic if you had flipped your camera or cropped it to a portrait orientation, to compliment the vertical shape of your subject. Other than that, it's perfect.

I wish my shots were half this good.

Sorry . . . can't help you with an ID, but it's a heron or an egret of some kind we don't see here. I love his green rubber wading boots!!
