I guess cos the journey on the subway is the time of the day when people slow down, think of what they've done, who they are.. a look inward.. and most people are not happy with their lives.. in general the time spent on transport is a time nowhere, in between places (that's why some people are always on the phone when on the bus/train/metro, they don't want to be left alone) my opinion anyway
