Night photo of Singapore Merlion with city nightscape in backsground.
The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, used as a mascot and national personification of Singapore. In 1972 it was installed at the mouth of the Singapore River and in 2002, the statue and its cub were relocated 120m to the current Merlion Park that fronts Marina Bay. Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it was called Temasek. The lion head represents Singapore's original name — Singapura — meaning "lion city".
