Photomatix is one of many HDR software packages. I take 3 bracketed shots, combine them and adjust them to my preference, save them and then decide if I need to work them further using Picasa or iPiccy (both of these are free photo editing software, that are really easy to use and available on line) or PSE 9.
You can download a free trial version of Photomatix and try it for a bit to decide if you like the package. I find it really nice for landscapes, architecture and some other categories. (vehicles, machinery, rusty stuff, etc.)
