#9 Scent of the Quyuan Brewery and Lotuses on the Wind (曲苑风荷), 4 January, 2013; another of West Lake’s 10 scenic spots (西湖十景).
During the Southern Song Dynasty of China, Quyuan Courtyard was the site of the imperial winery. When the gentle summer breeze blew through lotuses kept in the lake near the brewery, it mixed with the smells of alcohol. This was said to make even those not drinking feel intoxicated. Whether or not this economical drunkenness was more poetry than fact will have to be left to the imagination.
Truth be told. Now hand me a Tsingtao (beer)!
This is the second of my two reflections and is also the last of my "Winter in Hangzhou, West Lake (杭州, 西湖冬季)" series.
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who had stood by me these few weeks while I walked you through these nine scenes. I hope some of you will leave with a better appreciation of Chinese landscapes, or more specifically, Chinese Winter Landscapes.
