It has been said that the call of the barred owl sounds like he's saying "who cooks for you?"
This is another of the Carolina Raptor Center's lovely resident birds. A 16 year old Barred Owl who when very young had been found blinded by something. No one is sure exactly why the owl was blind but regardless, he would not have survived for long without the efforts of CRC. A very calm and docile owl, he's keenly aware of his surroundings by honing his other senses and to be honest, I would have had no idea he was blind were it not for his darkened eyes.
I was told by a caretaker that this owl can expect to live to be well over 40 years in captivity so he has a lot of time as an ambassador to educate folks about his wonderful species.
