It is only during winter that the rustic old walls of Ljubljana Castle are revealed to this extent. Once the trees on the castle hill drop their thick cloak of leaves, the castle projects a great sense of domination over the city. It is this time of year that most seems to bring out the castle's venerable history beginning in the twelfth century, when it was first mentioned in writing as Castrum Leibach. It is also the time of year when the sun's last rays reach the castle from this vantage point, picking it out against the towering peaks of the Kamnik Alps.
