This is a portion of the Maine Monument which greets patrons of Central Park at the Merchant's Gate entrance near Columbus Circle. Perhaps more known for the golden Columbia Triumphant statue perched atop the stone base, I thought this portion of the monument to be far more dramatic. The monument itself commemorates 260 American sailors who died when the battleship Maine exploded due to still unknown circumstances in the harbor off the coast of Havana, Cuba in 1898.
