Just up the road from Lone Pine, California, an old cottonwood tree stands steadfast and alone among the rugged and arid boulders of the Alabama Hills. This area has been the iconic set for countless Hollywood westerns, including many which starred John Wayne (about 13). To the right of the tree towers Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states of the USA.
