Two nights ago on my way home from teaching a night photography class, my friend Robert Pearce let me know that tragedy had struck at the core of the storm chasing community. Team Twistex, namely Tim Samaras, Carl Young, and Paul Samaras were killed just south of El Reno, Oklahoma on Friday during a major storm outbreak. Many are familiar with Tim and Carl because of their participation in the Discovery Channel series Storm Chasers. I knew Paul on a more personal level, having written back and forth on many occasions on facebook. He was a genuinely fantastic storm photographer who had a quick wit and a sense of absurdist humor that I genuinely enjoyed. Tim and Carl were researchers, helping scientists to understand tornado genesis with the sensors they would put along a tornados path. They were very serious about being safe, and would often be seen helping out others after an outbreak. That fact makes their untimely demise, and the first in the world of extreme chasers all the more surreal. This news is devastating to all who knew them and associated with them. My prayers are with their families as well as colleagues. This tragedy has taken away much of the joy that a stormy sky brings to me personally at this time. I will probably chase again someday, but for now I just want to remember some of the best that the human race had to offer. Elegant, wonderful, humble people who's sole determination was to make others safe through their inventions, observations, and discoveries.~M@
