Young raccoon seen lying near the roadside. He was originally near the tree seen directly behind him in the background. When I stopped to shoot him with a long lens (150-500), he was lying down as in this shot. He got up, stretched and walked up to me and stood up. Being uncertain of his intentions, I circled my vehicle and he followed - three times. Led him off toward the trees and backed up for a few more shots, squatting down to his level. He walked back over and I thought he was going to crawl up in my lap. After some observation and "conversation", I realized that this little guy was severely sick (possibly a raccoon's strain of parvo). Being near the road, I didn't want him to become road kill that I would have to see repetitively, so I led him out into the woods a good distance - since he followed me everywhere I went - then ran back to the vehicle so he couldn't follow. I felt so sad for the little guy, who seemed to also know he probably wouldn't be around to see Christmas and just wanted someone to console him. Maybe he got a Christmas miracle . . .
