I captured this image along with several others (click here) during a very surprising encounter at this park recently. The park has a large population of Sandhill Cranes during the summer months, and they are quite used to visitors and will usually allow you to get fairly close. However, to see a two day old chick on one of the paths was very unexpected, and may have been a once in a lifetime opportunity!
I kept as still as possible, and the family mostly ignored me, except at one point when they came very close. I decided to stay still, but as the mother crane walked by she turned and lunged at my camera lens! No harm done, but next time I will respectfully move away if any cranes approach.

Dear 500px friends...I am very fortunate to have several adventures planned with family and friends this summer, and starting next week, I will be off on an extended summer holiday. I look forward to keeping up with everyone this week, and after that I will return to 500px in September. Along with nature images, I will have new Civil War reenactment images to share and a new collection of vintage car images. I wish everyone a wonderful summer!!
