Rub' al Khali or Empty Quarter is one of the largest sand deserts in the world. It stretches across Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen and UAE. But these are just words that don't mean a lot.
You can't possibly imagine the immense vastness, suffocating solitude, the dead silence and otherworldliness of this place unless you've visited it. This year, I had the utmost privilege of filming and photographing it from the helicopter. I will never forget the experience.
Shooting from a moving helicopter proved to be a challenge. Low light levels of early morning sun combined with the rattle & shake produced by the Bell 412 helicopter were a challenge. I took this shot with Canon 5D Mark 2 and fantastic 70-300mm IS L set to high ISO and shutter speed in order to capture this crisp and very poetic image.
