When you get to Venice, Italy, you will learn several things almost immediately: breathtaking opportunities for photography abound, almost everyone has a camera, and if you shoot an SLR, eventually, someone will come up to you and ask you to take a picture of them, with their camera! It's lots of fun, and when it happens to me, I always try to create an image that will be a cut above the normal "snapshot." Usually this involves a little direction, some jokes or antics ("Say 'Formaggi!'") to lighten the mood, and help people loosen up a bit.
In this instance, I was standing on the #1 Vaparetto with my camera gear and luggage headed for my apartment off St. Marks, When I was asked to take a portrait of these lovely young ladies. The Vaparetto was crowded, as it often is, so there wasn't much room for staging. As I handed their camera back, I asked to take one for my portfolio, and they graciously agreed.
