The Amur leopard is probably the only big cat for which a reintroduction program using zoo stock is considered a necessary conservation action with some prospect of taking place in the near future. There are believed to be fewer than 35 of these magnificent cats remaining in the Russian far east.
A reintroduction plan has been prepared by local and international experts and, given the appropriate political support and the necessary funding, it is possible that in 1-2 years from now preparations in the field will have begun. It will however take many years to make a difference. The best forecasts are doubling the number of Amur leopards in the next 20 years.
