While I will get back to Kenya's cats soon enough, here is another attractive animal found in plentiful supply on the plains of the Masai Mara, a female Thompson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsoni). Gazelle is a name usually given to smaller antelope, of which there are many different species in the bovidae family. Bovids are herbivores, animals that have specially developed teeth and digestive systems that enable them to feed on grass, plants, foliage, and other forms of vegetation.
Herbivores like antelope are the primary source of food for carnivores such as lion, leopard, and cheetah, and once these carnivores have had their fill of a freshly killed herbivore, scavengers – like hyena, jackal, and vultures – quickly come in to pick the bones clean, such is the circle of life on the African savannah.
