Yike, it appears 500px adds a healthy dose of sharpening WTH, this looks way too noisey!

I had a great time at White Mountain last week tracking down the illusive Bristlecone Pine tree. A buddy and I spent about 7 hours reconning different areas, some long hikes some short but in either case the air at 11000’+ is so thin it took its toll on us. It was take 50 steps and rest, over and over. Thank God for my Olympic level fitness or it may have been 40 steps and rest.

The night was perfect, not too cold, just a thin slice of a moon which quickly disappeared, and a cloudless night sky, all good conditions for shooting the stars
.
The position of this tree was on a very steep slope with very sharp rock, how we managed to not slice ourselves after 4 hours in the dark was truly a miracle.

We didn’t see another soul from the Schulman Grove to Patriarch grove, except for some jackass on a mountain side who decided it would be great fun at 1 in the morning to flash a laser on us as we were driving down the road. If only we had a surface –to-air missile on hand!

This is two images, one at f2.8 for the stars about 25 seconds and the other for 48 seconds exposing for the tree, hand blended in PS.
