This west coast beach has been good to me. The seascapes I have made here over the years met with success in the most prestigious nature photography competitions in the USA (Windland Smith Rice), UK (Veolia/BBC) and Australia (ANZANG). Among these dramatic interpretations it was easy to overlook images like this one.

A 4 minute exposure creates a fantasy-like feel to this seascape. I get asked about big stoppers and NDs to lengthen exposures. Truth is that I don't even own a full ND, preferring to let the low light naturally produce a long exposure as in this case. As usual I used a grad filter to balance the sky and foreground light levels. Long exposures in low light often bring out colours that are far more vivid that what can be perceived by the naked eye.

I will be leading a private workshop in New Zealand during November and December 2013 with one spot open. If you would like further information I can be contacted on my Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/MagicHourTravelscapes
