This is a picture I took in Taiwan at the Chang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. The ceremonial guards at the entrance of the main hall stand stock still for a very, very long time. They don’t blink, they don’t budge, you can’t even see them swallow. In fact, this photo is not far removed from the actual experience. Of the two guards there when I went, this one caught my attention because time seems to have frozen him in place. The only way the tourists milling around him could tell he was alive was by watching the sweat dripping down the brow of his counterpart on the other side. They both had to be human. I was impressed.
