When visiting Palenque, you can hear the cries of the monkeys nearby in the jungle.
This is the Temple of the Inscriptions in Palenque, a spectacular maya site in southern Mexico.
The ruins were discovered within the tropical jungle made up of cedar, mahogany and sapodilla trees, near the river Usumacinta, close to the border with Guatemala.
The Temple of the Inscriptions was built in 680AD as the funerary monument for king Pakal.
It has been extremely important in the study of the Maya, as it contains extraordinary samples of hieroglyphic texts, and impressive sculptural panels.
