This is a cross-section of a banyan tree, a very odd species that sends roots down from it's branches, which in turn grow and send out more branches, resulting in a massive organism that can eventually cover acres of land. Trees have held a special place of fascination to me ever since having visited Sequoia National Park in northern California (U.S.). The sight of living things so old and so massive was truly awe inspiring.
